As the director of a leading clinical research site in
Kentucky, I’ve dedicated my 30-year nursing career to the rules of science. To
the protocols and procedures. The meticulous charting. The necessary tedium of
vaccine trials, like the ones for COVID-19.
Those rules are sacred, because those rules save lives.
But the rules of art? Those are mine to break. After
attending an art workshop in 2017, I discovered a passion to create fine art.
It began as play, but turned into much more. For me, art is a release. As soon
as paint hits canvas, my stress melts away. Through the instinctual and
impulsive strokes of my paintbrush, I find freedom. Creating is my escape…a
way to refocus and restore my mind.
When the pandemic hit, my team was selected as a trial site
for one of the first COVID-19 vaccines. It has been the most important and
challenging work of my life. Since then, my art has become more than just a passion.
It has provided balance and a new calling. My art takes me further than my
imagination and beyond what I think I am capable of—a place with no
